Paraquat is an industrial herbicide used to treat toxic weeds and grass coming on the market around 1964. It is referred to as paraquat dichloride and has been sold under many bran names such as Blanco, bonfire Herbicide, Devour, Firestorm, Gramaxone, Helmquat, Para-SHOT, Parazone and Quik-Quat. While the herbicide is banned in over 30 countries worldwide, it is still allowed to be used commercially in the United States.

Exposure to paraquat in the industrial or farm setting, has been linked to an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s. In fact the National Institute of Health’s Environmental Health Sciences found that those exposed to Paraquat are 2.5 times more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative condition that is susceptible to to certain chemicals as risk factors according to many scientists.

In 2016, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) restricted the use for Paraquat to reduce exposure of workers who are involved in the handling and/or disbursing of the herbicide. These changes included adding a label to the product stating that it was highly toxic, requiring specialized training for applicators and the creation of a closed-system package to only allow the disbursing of Paraquat into the appropriate equipment. The EPA went a step further in 2020 , in furthering prohibiting the aerial use of Paraquat to particular crops, requiring specialized respirators for disbursing and restricting the entry to the area sprayed for a period of 48 hours.
